Installation

Our medical gas installation service includes:

  • Pipework for new and upgrade projects
  • Medical vacuum plant
  • Medical air plant
  • Manifolds
  • Medical gas alarm systems
  • Anaesthetic Gas Scavenging Systems (AGSS)

We plan each installation carefully, ensuring that our work causes minimal disturbance to hospital routines and is co-ordinated with the work of other site contractors.

We always strive to maintain a fully operational MGPS while carrying out work and can supply a range of temporary solutions to prevent patient care being disrupted during plant upgrades.

Our installations are fully tested at each stage and upon completion, are certified in accordance with the requirements of HTM 02-01, ISO 13485 and ISO 9001.

Our long-term relationships with a variety of suppliers ensures competitive rates for all items of MGPS plant.

We supply and install a wide range of medical gas alarm systems, including our own brand (Evolution), which offers a 24/7 remote, multi-site monitoring and alert service.

Medical Gas System Design

Our team of in-house estimating engineers, project managers and CAD technicians will design your entire MGPS, for your refurbishment, upgrade, or new build.

Based on your planned usage and hospital layout, our design team will generate diversified flow calculations for each medical gas required. We will then recommend appropriate plant specifications to achieve the most efficient and reliable system. We also produce isometric drawings that can be incorporated into your Building Information Modelling system.

This is followed by a detailed project proposal and quotation, which sets out all the plant, pipework, materials, and labour needed. It addresses the site-specific requirements for installations and provides a detailed cost breakdown for the completed project.

Expert Project Management

We have over 50 years of experience co-ordinating bespoke projects in both NHS and private healthcare establishments. From receipt of initial enquiry through to commissioning and final handover, our highly experienced installation team provide our customers with all the technical support they need.

Our dedicated project managers are on hand for every project, overseeing it from conception through to completion. They will manage the entire project ranging from item replacements to the planning, design, installation, testing and on-going maintenance of a complete hospital MGPS. We can work directly with customers or in a supplier capacity with a contractor or sub-contractor.

  • Detailed site and plant surveys
  • As-fitted drawings with AutoCAD facilities
  • Up to date asset registers
  • Leading or directing engineering teams

  • Providing an Authorised Person (AP) for MGPS in the absence of their regular AP or where there is no directly employed AP onsite.

Laboratory Gas Supply Systems

Modern pharmaceutical, medical and research laboratories use a number of gases as part of their daily operations and SHJ works with many of the UK’s key sites by installing and maintaining laboratory gas supply systems.

We install the infrastructure for laboratory gases (nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, methane and mixed gas), vacuum plants and compressed air systems in research labs, using either copper or stainless-steel pipework. We also take care of all associated plants, such as cylinder cages, gas detection sensors with automatic shutoffs and sounder beacons.

Whether it is installing laboratory gas supply systems or providing maintenance with real-time plant and alarm monitoring, SHJ delivers a complete solution.

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital

During 2021, Chelsea & Westminster hospital had the need to expand their ICU and NICU units via a roof extension.

The installation included oxygen, air and vacuum, and SHJ ensured that medical gas services were fully operational throughout the works period which extended to 18 months, due to Covid restrictions.

Hillingdon Hospital

SHJ was commissioned for two phases of medical gas installation for the Hillingdon hospital modular build in 2021.

Firstly, working with MTX to create a new, two storey, 60 bed ITU. SHJ supplied all new infrastructure including oxygen ring main, dual circuit gases to both floors and medical gas alarm panels.

During the second phase, we worked with Gallant, to install medical gas pipeline systems for the three floor modular south building.

Main Contractors: MTX & Gallant

Project value: £860k

Brunel University

During 2021, we undertook an installation of medical air and vacuum, laboratory cylinder gas supplies and gas detection systems to serve the Quad North Building at Brunel University.

Stainless steel pipework was selected to match the cleanness grade of the gases used, ensuring high purity and leak-proof integrity.

Main Contractor: D P Building Services

Project value: £150k

Luton & Dunstable University Hospital

Luton & Dunstable University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had a requirement for the redevelopment of their Acute Services Block and New Ward Block.

The project is currently in progress and is our largest to date, and includes the installation of medical gas pipework, alarm panels, pendants, air plant, vacuum plant, 15 AGSS plants and AVSU units. We have 8 installation engineers working on-site. the installation which commenced in 2023, will be completed later this year.
