22 Nov SHJ nominated for ‘Making a Difference’ Award at Charing Cross Hospital
SHJ has been nominated for an award, following a swift resolution to a problem at Charing Cross Hospital.
A leak in the main steam system condensate receiver in the basement of the CXH Tower was noticed on 12th November and it was quickly established that a replacement receiver could take anything from 4-6 weeks.
One of the key issues was the very tight operational plant room space available.
Worsening of the leak would have resulted in the loss of steam supply to the site with significant loss of clinical services.
SHJ and other key contractors, put together a plan to start ‘re-purposing’ a Medical Air receiver that SHJ had available and one that would fit into the limited space available. Work began immediately to collect the receiver and get it to the workshop for fabrication to suit existing pipework connections.
The image shows how our medical air receiver has been adapted to suit the purpose.
The works went ahead as planned on Sunday 17th November and steam was reinstated by 16.30 (ahead of the planned time) – with no major issues being reported. The Facilities team worked wonders and managed to get additional blankets in at short notice to help make up for the loss/reduction in heating.
Shane King, Head of Estates Operations at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, contacted all the contractors involved to express the Trust’s gratitude…
“Can you all please ensure that this thank you is relayed to the members of your team involved as we know that they had to work extended hours and give up their weekend to get the job done – what a fantastic effort by everyone!”
